Health Promotion- Research Interests

Research interests include health initiatives in the area of prevention to ameliorate chronic diseases and to improve quality of life.

Clary, J.M. (Principal Investigator), Freeman, N., Sadler, L (2006). Communities Caring for Families: A Focus on Katrina Victims.  Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture ($111.312).

Goals: Establish support groups to help alleviate stress and stress related illness in five of the coastal counties hardest hit by Katrina. The aim is to provide support and education on timely, relevant topics, through collaborative efforts with faith-based organizations, and volunteer peer counselors in local communities.

Clary, J.M. (P.I.) (2006). Delta Health Initiative: HERSA, Department of Health & Human Services, "Improving Quality of Life Through Physical Activity and Healthy Eating.".  Mississippi In Motion Project #20. Funded by the Delta Health Alliance ($517, 590).

Goals: “Mississippi In Motion” (MIM) is a research based, peer-reviewed curriculum for a community based, 12-week program designed to promote healthy eating and to encourage positive physical activity behaviors The study is focused on 10 counties in the Mississippi Delta.

Clary, J. M.  (P.I.) (2006-2008). Mississippi In Motion: Funded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.

Goals: To increase physical activities and increase health eating throughout the state. Mississippi In Motion is endorsed by Governor Haley Barbour through the Commission on physical activities and sports.
